U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns said that Beijing is closely observing Russia’s crisis in Ukraine, and it’s affecting China’s calculations on Taiwan.

Burns said in an interview with the Financial Times on May 7 that he thinks the Chinese leadership is looking very carefully at all this, at the costs and consequences of any effort to use force to gain control over Taiwan.

He said that he doesn’t think that Xi’s determination to gain control over Taiwan has wavered for one minute.

However, Burns said he thinks it’s something that’s affecting their calculation about how and when they go about doing that.

Burns believes Beijing has been startled by Russian military forces’ poor performance and is concerned that Putin’s actions bring Europeans and Americans closer together.
