Diplomatic “warrior” Qin Gang, China’s ambassador to the U.S., appointed by Xi Jinping, has been missing in the U.S. for a long time. Hong Kong media revealed Qin Gang has been out of sight in the U.S. for over a month. Moreover, although the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations held a dinner in New York at the end of October, U.S. and Chinese officials sent congratulatory letters, and the ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang, did not attend.

In the list of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Qin Gang is the only minister-level official and vice minister in the diplomatic system. He is a possible candidate to be the CCP’s future foreign minister, so his “disappearance” and future development were even more speculated on by the outside world.

The Wall Street Journal believes that the CCP’s upcoming reorganization of the new diplomatic corps will spur the promotion of some of its most loyal and tough generals. In the upcoming time, the CCP will continue to promote “wolf diplomacy” and adopt a more radical fighting attitude in the face of Western countries.

Qin Gang arrived in the United States on July 28, 2021, and submitted his credentials to the U.S. Department of State’s Reception Division the next day. It may be related to the COVID pandemic, and so far, he has not officially submitted his credentials to Biden, and Secretary of State Blinken did not even hear him. During his eighteen months in the United States, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman was the highest-ranking American official he met.

The Wall Street Journal previously revealed that Xi Jinping broke precedent and personally selected Qin Gang as ambassador to the United States. Qin Gang had never previously served as an ambassador or in any position directly related to the U.S. The person most valued by the Chinese State Department, Zheng Zeguang, was considered too meek to take on the critical task of dealing with the Americans. It shows that Qin Gang, who “dares to fight and is good at fighting,” is even more respected by Xi Jinping.

Qin Gang is known to be someone who “resolutely defends the interests of the CCP and makes sharp remarks.” He and Wang Yi, China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister, represent Xi Jinping’s foreign policy.

The outside world speculated that Qin’s disappearance could be related to his preparation to take over as foreign minister in March next year.
