Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke for the second time with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba by phone on April 4.
According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, Wang said, “China welcomes peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. China is willing to continue to play a constructive role in its own way.”
According to Bloomberg, Wang Lutong, head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s European department, said on April 2 that the rare meeting suggested that Chinese leader Xi Jinping will soon make a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Wang said that the high-profile talk between Xi and Zelenskyy has “always been on the agenda.”
As Reuters reported, Beijing said the top diplomats’ meeting between China and Ukraine occurred under Ukraine’s request.
According to Josep Borrell, Vice-President of the European Commission, Xi speaking to Zelenskyy “is something that the EU side encouraged” at the EU-China summit on April 1.
