According to the religious freedom and human rights magazine Bitter Winter, family members of Tan Qiucheng, a Falun Dafa practitioner currently imprisoned and tortured in Jilin Province’s No. 2 prison in China, are concerned about his health.
Tan, 44, is subjected to all kinds of torture, such as sitting on a “tiger bench” and receiving electric shocks after being doused with water.
His continued refusal to sign a statement that he will stop practicing Falun Dafa makes prison guards furious, and they are taking their anger out on him.
Tan has spent most of his life in prison since he was 21 years old.
As a teenager, Tan began practicing Falun Dafa, an ancient discipline of the Buddha school for improving the body and mind that became very popular in China in the 1990s.
After beginning his practice, the young man made a resounding change in his life, giving up addictions to drinking and gambling to the delight of his family.
The practice, also known as Falun Gong, is based on the teaching of Truth, Benevolence, and Tolerance and a set of 5 exercises. According to the Chinese regime, by the late 1990s, it had an estimated 75 to 100 million practitioners.
Due to the high popularity of Falun Dafa, the then leader of the Chinese regime, Jiang Zemin, ordered a severe crackdown on Falun Dafa practitioners in July 1999.
That same year, at the age of 21, Tang was arrested and sentenced to one year of “re-education through labor” near the city of Yushu, Qinghai Province.
After his release, he steadfastly continued his practice until 2001, when he was arrested again. As a result, he was sentenced in 2002 to another 15 years in prison for being considered a repeat offender.
In a serious state of ill health, Tang was released in 2014, whereupon he denounced the torture to which he was exposed.
In 2019, 5 years after being released, he was again arrested for continuing to practice Falun Dafa, according to article 300 of the Chinese penal code.
On Sept. 28 of the same year, he was sentenced to 7 years in prison by the Lishu County Court of Siping City, Jilin Province.
Despite having appealed the conviction, on April 30, 2021, the Siping Intermediate Court upheld the verdict.
The Chinese Communist regime has not been able to break Tan’s faith in Falun Dafa despite all these years of brutal persecution and torture.
