27th U.N.’s Climate Change Conference is taking place on November 6-18 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. At this conference, a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) representative stated that it has helped Taiwan implement climate change policies.
Taiwan News cited China’s special envoy for climate change Xie Zhenhua, saying, “Within the policy of One China, we have provided assistance to Taiwan to implement climate policies.”
In response, the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on November 10 shut down CCP’s claim.
MOFA said that Xie’s lie at U.N.’s Climate Change Conference was an “improper denigration” of Taiwan’s sovereignty.
“The effectiveness of Taiwan’s environmental protection policies is obvious to all countries and has nothing to do with China.”
The ministry added Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero carbon emissions goal “far exceeds China’s commitments on climate change.”
MOFA also said that the CCP had prevented Taiwan from joining international forums against global climate change.
The ministry called on the international community to take “concrete actions” to help Taiwan by recognizing Taiwan’s contribution to fighting climate change.
MOFA also suggested that the world should support Taiwan in participating in activities related to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. Besides, let’s allow Taiwan contribute more to the global net-zero emissions goal.
