According to Reuters, on May 3, China’s envoy to the Korean Peninsula emphasized Beijing’s commitment to play a constructive role in resolving the nuclear issue with North Korea.
Liu Xiaoming, the Chinese government’s representative for the Korean Peninsula, made the remark during a meeting with his South Korean counterpart, Noh Kyu-duk, in Seoul.
His remarks came just a week after the North promised to expand its nuclear arsenal.
On May 1, Liu expressed concern over tensions amid North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile threats. He added that tensions needed to be resolved.
Liu also called on all sides to remain calm. He added that Beijing disapproves of actions by any party that could escalate tension.
He stated that North Korea and the United States hold the key to resolving the issue.
