On April 30, Beijing held the 320th press conference on preventing and controlling the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak.

Authorities announced that Beijing would strengthen mandating nucleic acid tests starting from the international labor vacation, which begins on April 30 and continues until May 4. These measures aim to contain the new coronavirus outbreak that is spreading fast in Beijing.

According to the First Financial report, Tian Wei, Director of the External Information Division of the Publicity Department of the Municipal Party Committee, said that during the international labor vacation period, people aren’t allowed to leave their residence unless necessary. They also need to take a nucleic acid test.

As of May 5, access to “many public places and public transportation” will require a negative new Coronavirus test within the past week.

For events such as sporting events and group travel, participants will also be required to show a negative test result within the last 48 hours and prove that they have been fully vaccinated.

Tian Wei also said that Beijing strictly performs capital management prevention and control coordination mechanisms. On this holiday, the city’s parks, scenic spots, and cultural and sports entertainment venues strictly implement the requirements of limited numbers, following the 50% current limit.

These strict measures are considered the “zero covid” policy of China’s government. However, it has led to a slowdown in the country’s economy. With infections still increasing daily, this policy is causing increased frustration among the population.
