The Hebei Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection or Hebei CDI reported on Feb. 17 that Wang Jiuzong, Hebei Provincial Development and Reform Commission’s former inspector, is currently under investigation for serious disciplinary violations.

Wang Jiuzong, born in August 1957, has held several high-ranking positions in Zunhua city, Yutian city, and Tangshan City. He became Tangshan’s Vice Mayor, and the Inspector of Hebei Province’s Development and Reform Commission, before retiring in September 2017.

Previously, Wang’s boss—Chen Xuejun, a former mayor of Tangshan City, was under investigation on June 5th, 2015, just three days after Chen stepped down as the Tangshan City’s Mayor.

At the time, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection’s website quoted sources from the Hebei CDI, saying Chen Xuejun was under suspicion for “serious violations of discipline and law.”

Reports say that Wang’s boss was arrested for being involved in the money laundering case of Zeng Qinghong’s daughter-in-law Jiang Mei and others.

Apart from Wang Jiuzong and Chen Xuejun, Tangshan City, Hebei province, has witnessed the fall of several mayors and vice mayors, including:

  • “Gao Jianmin, former Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Mayor of Tangshan City, was expelled from the party and arrested in January 2022 under suspicion of taking bribes;
  • Liu Jianli, the Standing Committee of the Tangshan Municipal Committee and Deputy Mayor, was sacked in May 2018;
  • Li Xiaojun, the deputy mayor of Tangshan, was fired in December 2016.”

After the 18th Communist Party Congress, many senior officials from Hebei province were sacked one after another, including:

  • Zhou Benshun, secretary of the Hebei Provincial Party Committee;
  • Zhang Yue, secretary of the Political and Legal Committee;
  • and Jing Chunhua, a member of the Standing Committee and secretary-general of the provincial party committee.
