COVID medical workers work all over China. Some are said to earn up to 10,000 yuan or nearly $1,400 a month. This is the same as what an ordinary physician earns.

One Radio Free Asia’s reporter checked several talent recruitment websites and found that monthly salaries for epidemic control workers are above average compared to other jobs.

For example, on Friday, October 14, a technology company in Shanghai’s Hongkou district advertised a salary of 8,000 to 10,000 yuan, or $1,100 to $1,400 per month, for nucleic acid test samplers.

A medical laboratory in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, pays nucleic acid samplers between 10,000 and 60,000 yuan, or $1,400 to $8,400 per month. In addition, companies in China’s “silicon valley,” Shenzhen, offer between 8,000 and 10,000 yuan, or between $1,100 and $1,400 per month.

At the same time, the Yangpu district in Shanghai was looking for doctors with more than ten years’ experience. But the pay ranged only from 7,000 to 9,000 yuan or $970 to just over $1,200 a month.

Kunming, the largest city in the southwestern province of Yunnan, offers a monthly salary of only 4,000 to 9,000 yuan, or $550 to just over $1,250.

Xi’an pays 4,000 to 8,000 yuan, or $550 to $1,100. Wuxi offers 10,000 to 15,000 yuan, or $1,400 to $2,100.

This kind of job advertisement aroused the public’s anger. For example, after Pudong and Huangpu in Shanghai posted COVID’s worker recruitment ad, some people mocked it.

Some say that the nucleic acid testing industry could take over from real estate as a pillar of the economy. The fight against the epidemic in this regard has created many new jobs.

Since the pandemic began two years ago, China has strictly followed a zero-COVID policy. As a result, it only takes a few cases to put an entire community on lockdown.
