Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook on Tuesday in Cupertino, California, unveiled the iPhone 11 series that will be on the market on September 20.
The new series will look like recent models, but will be equipped with improved cameras and new colors.
Speaking at the press conference, Cook said, “Today, I am thrilled to share with you the newest iPhone.”
“This is iPhone 11, the next generation of iPhone, and it is jam packed with great new capabilities and an incredible new design,” said Cook.
Apple Senior Director of Product Marketing Kaiann Drance spoke about the improved technology used for the phone camera.
“The glass that surrounds the camera has a sculpted 3D geometry and it was precision milled down from a single piece of glass to achieve this elegant look,” said Drance. The phone features an all-new wide camera with a new sensor with 100 percent focus pixels for faster autofocus, three times faster in low light, Drance continued.
It has a “new ultra wide camera, with a 120 degree field of view,” said Drance.
Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller explained the improved features of the cameras. “First with a telephoto camera and the ultra wide, you have the ability to zoom in 2 times and zoom out 2 times. That’s a 4x optical zoom range with these three cameras, you have incredible creative control,” said Schiller.
He explained how to use the telephoto to get “close on your subject to really zoom in on it,” or “use the wide to tell a bit more of a story,” or to “pull all the way out to the ultra wide and reveal the full surroundings.”
Drance said the phone has a “6.1 inch liquid Retina display, with true tone wide color tapped away and haptic touch and even more places with iOS13.”
She said the improved display makes watching videos a “wonderful” experience. And on top of that, the iPhone 11 comes with “spatial audio” that offers “an immersive theater-like experience by creating a sound field around you, using an Apple designed virtualizer,” explained Drance.
The new iPhone 11 will cost $700, whereas the price for the most expensive models—the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max—starts at $1,000.
These two models, iPhone 11 Pro and the Pro Max, have three cameras on the back, including a new, wider-angle one.
During the products unveiling event, Apple also announced its new Apple Watch.
Apple Vice President of Manufacturing Design Stan Ng said the new display always stays on, unlike previous models of Apple Watch, when the display would go completely dark. “But now with Series five you’ll always be able to see your time and complications,” said Ng.
